I was away in Abuja when I received a call from my aunt that my dad had been admitted to a private clinic somewhere around Jos. I was very worried because my father had visited the hospital so many times in a very short period. Few years earlier daddy was diagnosed with kidney problem. We were in and out of hospital this particularly was a trying period in our lives.
I left Abuja immediately for Jos, When I got to Jos, my dad could not recognize anyone and he couldn't talk. The doctor of the private clinic referred us to Jos University Teaching Hospital .We left for Juth, Luckily for me i had a friend who was a doctor working with JUTH, he was able to get a nurse that was waiting for us by the time we got to the hospital. Daddy was admitted into the emergency ward and a doctor came, went through daddy’s file and set up intravenous fluids for him and disappeared
For almost four hours after daddy was admitted no doctor came to check on him my aunts were furious, daddy was restless and in pains. When we called on the nurses all they said was the doctor will be with us shortly. The doctor later showed up and asked to see daddy's file and speak with my mom while the doctor was talking to my mom, daddy went into a cardiac arrest. Daddy passed away at 3:55pm.It was indeed a sad day for the whole family
I know life and death belongs to Allah, but with better health care system, I deeply believe my dad's life would have been saved. Nigeria still has a long way to go as regards health care
